Saving Graham Linehan: Granting Asylum to a Free Speech Refugee
Stand Against UK Censorship and Protect a Comedian Persecuted for His Views
Today, I launched a Change.org petition urging the US government to grant political asylum to Graham Linehan, the brilliant Irish comedian behind Father Ted, The IT Crowd, and Black Books. You might know him as "Glinner" on X, where he’s been a fearless voice for women’s rights and free speech. But in the UK, his outspoken gender-critical views—protected under America’s First Amendment—have made him a target of relentless persecution. This post explains why this petition matters, what’s at stake, and why you should sign and share it.
Why Graham Linehan Needs Asylum
Graham Linehan has spent nearly a decade criticizing gender ideology, particularly its impact on women’s spaces and children’s healthcare. He believes, as many do, that policies like self-ID and puberty blockers harm vulnerable groups. For this, he’s paid a devastating price:
Career Obliterated: Once a celebrated writer with five BAFTA awards, Linehan has been blacklisted by the UK and Irish entertainment industries. Channel 4 and the BBC dropped his projects, labeling his work “transphobic” despite its unrelated comedic genius.
Personal Devastation: Activists targeted his family, contributing to the end of his 16-year marriage. His ex-wife faced harassment, including police visits that left her terrified. Friends deserted him, leaving him isolated and financially strained.
Legal Persecution: On September 1, 2025, Linehan was arrested at Heathrow Airport by five armed officers for three X posts made while in the US. The posts, which called trans-identified males in women’s spaces “abusive” and suggested self-defense (precisely the same advice I have given to my daughter), were charged as “inciting violence” under the UK’s vague Public Order Act. He was hospitalized after his blood pressure spiked during interrogation. He also faces a separate harassment trial he denies.
The UK’s speech laws have spiraled into what critics like Nigel Farage and JD Vance call “North Korea” territory. Even UK Health Secretary Wes Streeting admits these laws need reform, as police waste resources “policing tweets” instead of tackling real crimes like knife attacks. Linehan’s case is a stark warning: in the UK, dissent can cost you everything.
Why the US? Why Now?
Six months ago, Linehan fled to Arizona, invited by comedian Rob Schneider to rebuild his life in a country that values free expression. There, he’s safe to create without fear—but only temporarily. Without asylum or permanent residency, he risks extradition or further UK reprisals. His lawyer, Aaron Siri, has formally requested asylum, calling Linehan a “United Kingdom Free Speech Refugee.” Siri compares the UK’s speech laws to those in Brazil or Uruguay—hardly beacons of liberty.
President Trump’s administration has a track record of offering asylum to those fleeing ideological persecution, like white South African farmers he called victims of genocide. Linehan’s fight aligns with this: he’s battling a trans lobby he believes endangers women and children. Denying him asylum would betray America’s role as a haven for free thinkers.
As Elon Musk tweeted about similar UK cases: “Police state.”
The Petition’s Demands
The petition, live on Change.org, calls for:
Asylum for Linehan: Expedite his application and grant permanent residency in the United States.
Condemn UK Censorship: Publicly denounce Britain’s attack on free speech.
Protect Free Speech Advocates: Review US-UK extradition treaties to shield others like Linehan.
We’re aiming for 100,000 signatures to show the Trump Administration, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Congress that the world is watching. Supporters like J.K. Rowling (“What the f*** has the UK become?”), Toby Young of the Free Speech Union, and countless X users are already rallying behind Linehan.
Why You Should Care
This isn’t just about one comedian. It’s about whether we let governments criminalize opinions. Linehan’s story—losing his career, family, and safety for speaking his mind—could be any of ours in a world where dissent is punished. The US has a chance to draw a line in the sand: protect free speech or let censorship win. By signing, you’re telling the world that truth-tellers deserve a home.

Learn More: Check Linehan’s Substack, his GB News interviews, or The Sun’s coverage for his side of the story.
Stay Loud: Keep talking about free speech. The more we amplify Linehan’s case, the harder it is for censors to silence him—or us.
A Personal Note
I launched this petition because Linehan’s courage has always inspired me. He’s not perfect, but he’s a man who stood up for what he believes, even when it cost him everything. In a world where comedy is silenced and truth is a crime, we need to stand with him. America was built on the idea that no one should fear speaking their mind. Let’s make sure it stays that way.
