Time To Take Boy George Down A Peg...Or Six
1
Boy George

Hellooo, my freaky Substack darlings!

If you’ve been scrolling X lately, you might’ve stumbled across a fiery exchange that’s got me—and apparently a chunk of the internet—both riled up and inspired. It’s a clash between J.K. Rowling and Boy George, sparked by a debate on transgender rights, but it’s taken a wild detour into personal history and hypocrisy. As someone who loves a good story (and a good tune), I couldn’t resist diving in—and even turned it into a song! Let me break it down for you.

The X Firestorm

It all kicked off with Rowling asking a pointed question on June 13, 2025: “Which rights have been taken away from trans people?”. This came amid her ongoing, polarizing stance on gender issues, backed by data like a 2021 study in the Archives of Sexual Behavior showing 60-90% of childhood gender dysphoria resolves without medical intervention. The U.S. Supreme Court’s recent June 2025 ruling upholding Tennessee’s ban on gender-affirming care for minors only fueled her argument.

Enter Boy George. On June 14, he fired back, claiming the “right to be left alone by a rich bored bully”—a jab at Rowling. But here’s where it gets juicy: George’s own past includes a 2007 conviction for falsely imprisoning Audun Carlsen, a Norwegian model and escort. Court records (per The Guardian) detail how he handcuffed Carlsen to a radiator in his London flat, allegedly beating him with a chain (though George denied the assault). He served four months of a 15-month sentence, and Carlsen later said it “ruined his life” after eight years of therapy. X users didn’t hold back.

Why I’m Calling Foul

Look, I get that everyone’s entitled to their view, but George’s hypocrisy is glaring. He’s crying persecution while his own actions scream boundary violation. Rowling, love her or hate her, built her empire from nothing—meanwhile, George’s fame came early with Culture Club, and his legal troubles paint a different picture. The thread’s replies and the data backing Rowling’s stance make me think it’s high time someone took him down a peg—or six.
