The Gender Trap

A Swingin’ Take on Stereotypes and Sex

Hey, Substack crew! I’m stoked to share the lowdown on my latest track, The Gender Trap—a piano-driven swing banger that’s a hard pivot from my usual country music offerings. This song’s packed with sass, sharp lyrics, and a word that’ll trip up your tongue: gynoandromorphophilic. Big thanks to Matt Osborne (@OsborneInk) of The Distance Magazine whose input helped shape this tune into the groove it is.

The Gender Trap is a lyrical middle finger to gender stereotypes—those societal “traps” like “girls wear pink, boys wear blue” or “men don’t show weakness.” The real talk? Biological sex is the foundation, while gender’s just a construct, a game of expectations we can kick to the curb. I leaned into the internet meme “traps aren’t ghey,” riffing on online debates about attraction and identity with a cheeky smirk.

For an extra challenge prompted by Matt (challenge accepted), I wove in gynoandromorphophilic—a term for attraction to folks with mixed male/female traits. It’s a beast of a word, but it fits the song’s mission of smashing rigid labels and having fun while at it. The result is a track that’s part jazzy strut, part cultural clapback, and all about dancing free from society’s boxes.
